The well got its name from the wheel well (Raderbrunner in German) after the water-lifting device. Due to the poor quality of the well water, its use was abandoned in the middle of the 19th century, the well remained neglected and was popularly called the Cat Well (Katzenbrunner in German) until it was closed.
